A dilemma (from the Greek, dis = two, lemma = topic or premise) is a problem whose solution allows for two possibilities, but none of them is completely satisfactory, so that a diﬃcult choice comes out, upon which ethical and moral issues oﬅen impact. When a dilemma appears it is not possible to choose from a correct or an incorrect issue, but between two options that may be correct at the same time, but contrary to each other in a certain sense; between two equally appreciated values which, however, come into a conﬂict. In the ﬁeld of visuality the dilemmas appear frequently, and seem to have multiplied themselves in the contemporary world, where images and their implications have acquired new strength in the inﬁnite web of global connectivity.

It is perhaps in the ﬁeld of photography –and particularly in press photography, traditionally linked to the greater eﬀects of reality– where the most dilemmatic situations arise today: to make visible –or not– the oﬅen terrifying image of the present conﬂictive scenario, with its wars, attacks, famine, forced migrations, that put us “regarding the pain of others”, as Susan Sontag pointed out, and that may elicit undecidable political dilemmas that involve power factors in a worldwide level. In this extreme visibility, which expands the limits of the knowable, where the many forms of art also are displayed, images seem to recover the symbolic power that worried the ancient people, putting them at the risk of new idolatries. Visibility is assumed as a condition of democracy, as an imaginary of transparency, but also as an erasure of the uncertain threshold between public and private domains, another of the dilemmatic zones.

The dilemmatic visual situations are not limited, however, to moral or cultural questions; they appear equally in the more primary context of visual perception. In this sense, visual ambiguities, paradoxes and antinomies have also a place in the theme we are concerned with. The identiﬁcation of the referents may suﬀer from the hesitations coming both from the perceptual organism and from the organization of the object. Even images that are generated and used in the context of scientiﬁc practices (diagnosis, experimentation, demonstration, explanation, etc.), which are oﬅen endorsed with a pretension of objectivity and unambiguity, do not escape from these situations.

Thus, visual contemporary dilemmas concern both ethics and aesthetics, politics, human and social sciences in general, as well as natural sciences, perhaps with special emphasis on biology. Since all knowledge relies on signs, the semiotic perspective allows precisely for an interdisciplinary and integrating view. Is in this vast territory that we want to pose the semiotic reﬂection on the dilemmas of visuality, calling to questioning, thinking and criticis

History marks territories that in some way or another are reflected in
design. Since the first ICDHS conference, held in Barcelona in 1999,
significant steps were taken to draw attention to the nature of design
studies, practice and history in a wider world context. Parallel to
that, the configuration of design landscapes has been significantly
altered by education, technology and national state policies intended
to promote local industries and sites by means of design.

The 8th ICDHS conference, “Design Frontiers: territories, concepts,
technologies”, aims to discuss how design history and design studies
may push the limits of design knowledge. The frontiers of design may
be challenged by the exploration of new territories, by the
establishment of new concepts, by the emergence of new technologies,
as well as by rediscovering the past and by finding new ways of
applying current wisdom.

SUBMISSIONS

Papers are expected to address one of the conference tracks, and to
make an original contribution to the field of design history and
design studies. Paper proposals will be selected by the ICDHS members
and the scientific committee to cover different areas, methods,
approaches and positions.

All proposals should be submitted via EasyChair system, accessible
through this link.

Submissions should be prepared according to the conference guidelines
available in the conference website.

Official language for submissions is English only.

Papers selected might be indicated to be presented orally or in poster format.
All selected papers will be published in the conference proceedings.

Authors of the best papers will be invited to submit extended versions
for publication in a book of selected papers to be published by
Editorial Designio.

TRACK 1 | History of Design Education
This track welcomes historical studies of design education,
particularly comparative studies of design education in different
countries, cultures, periods, in its relationship with art and
technology education.

enabling technologies that have impacted or will impact on the

Modern semiotic theories can be traced back to four theoretical sources originating in the beginning of the 20th century: Saussurean structural linguistics, Peircean pragmatism, Husserlian phenomenology and analytical philosophy. Since then a variety of semiotic theories in various fields of European and American human and social sciences have developed in addition to philosophical ways of reasoning. Semiotic theorization is typically interdisciplinary in nature, indicating a pluralization of scientific thinking about mankind. This pluralized theoretical tendency has been further strengthened by the unprecedented progress of current semiotic sciences since the end of the Second World War. Current semiotics has become a major impetus for structural reform efforts in the human sciences.

After its hundred years of modernization contemporary semiotics has arrived at another turning point at the beginning of the 21st century: the globalization of semiotics, or cross-cultural semiotic expansion. Cross-cultural semiotics is the natural development and extension of the interdisciplinary humanities of the West in our times. Unlike the natural and social sciences, human sciences, including their semiotic epistemology and methodology, deal with both horizontal and diachronic phenomena in human history. That means semiotics, as a constitutive part of human sciences, is fated to be confronted with the most difficult as well as the most significant challenges arising from human conditions.

Semiotics is popularly called the logic or general semantics of culture. So it implicitly includes cultural-academic globalization and cross-civilization communication. In light of comparative scholarship, this new-century semiotics signifies a comprehensive interaction between European-American and non-European-American intellectual sources, characterized by its strength in doing general-semantic analysis in respect to linguistic-expressive, behavior-communicative and institutional-compositional levels. In this sense, semiotic work, necessarily interdisciplinary, must be converged with the modern theoretical practice of all human sciences still partly suffering from its traditional semantically ambiguous composition. The typology of the scientific and the rational practices would thus be more relevantly adjusted to accommodate different historical realities. Semiotics, functioning as a universal semantic denominator, will promote intellectual communication among different civilizations, cultures and disciplines.

The Nanjing 11th World Congress of Semiotics will be the first IASS forum in history to be held outside Europe or the Americas. Substantially and symbolically it will provide semiotic scholars from all over the world with a suitable dialogic context for exploring the new orientation of global semiotics. In conjunction with the 11th IASS Congress, whose program will basically follow the rules and procedures established in the past IASS congresses, there will be also a parallel conference in Nanjing, the First China Semiotics Forum, which will provide additional opportunities for comparative-semiotic communication.

In order to prepare the scientific program, we are requesting that interested participants initially present their proposals, or requests, for panels and round-tables to our scientific contact, Mr. Ji Haihong (semio2012@hotmail.com). The program will be arranged to reflect the interests and priorities of those intending to participate. Online registration and formal submission of abstracts (200-300 words) will be requested later, according to the rules that will be announced in the near future.

In cooperation with the Planetary Collegium, at the University of Plymouth, England, ICAC – Ionion Center for the Arts and Culture is hosting Consciousness Reframed International Research Conference series, with the title of ‘TECHNOETIC TELOS: Art, Myth and Media‘.
The Consciousness Reframed conference series was founded by Roy Ascott at the University of Wales in 1997. Consciousness Reframed is a forum for trans-disciplinary inquiry into art, science, technology, design and consciousness, drawing upon the expertise and insights of artists, designers, architects, performers, musicians, writers, scientists, and scholars, usually from at least 20 countries.
As part of the conference a call for papers is now open for 25-30 speakers, in addition to speakers involved in the Planetary Collegium doctoral research programme at CAiiA – Centre for Advanced Inquiry in the Interactive Arts.

"CRIAÇÃO EM PROCESSO+S | CREATION IN PROCESS+ES" PRAZO: 07 DE AGOSTO DE 2011

A edição número 06 da revista V!RUS pretende discutir processos de criação compreendidos em um amplo contexto de formulação, desenvolvimento, exploração e compartilhamento da experiência criativa. Pretende abordar tais processos também como lugares de encontro e sinergia capazes de abrigar interlocução entre diferentes áreas do conhecimento.

O tema "criação em processo+s" envolve as noções de processo e de criação. Por um lado, busca-se enfatizar o sentido de processo ao invés do de produto, ou seja, um interesse que se situa mais nas qualidades de ações continuadas ou em andamento, dos modos de fazer, dos métodos e dos procedimentos, e menos em traços ou propriedades isoladas de um resultado propriamente dito. Por outro, assume-se a noção de criação a partir do seu caráter semântico, ou seja, de ação ligada ao conceber, ao inventar, ao gerar, ao dar existência, ao produzir, ao aperfeiçoar, ao elaborar. Propõe-se, assim, um tema que abriga três leituras: a criação em processo, ou seja, em andamento; a ideia de criar examinada através do estudo de diferentes processos; e, finalmente, o plural adcionado enfatizando o caráter coletivo do ato de criar e de seus desdobramentos.

Não é objetivo desta edição tratar de processos solitários nos quais a designação autoral tenha um papel central. Nesse sentido, esse sexto número da revista V!RUS se propõe investigar processos de criação tecidos conjuntamente, que possibilitem o envolvimento de várias pessoas, priorizando-se processos criativos cujos resultados somente se completem com a participação de diferentes atores, com pluralidade de aportes e, consequentemente, de resultados. Quer-se, ainda, abordar entendimentos da criação como meio de fazer surgir o novo, o inédito, tanto em termos de produtos quanto do próprio processo, permitindo emergências, prevendo a ocorrência do indeterminado.

Interessam-nos contribuições que envolvam estudos de processos de criação advindos das ciências naturais, das ciências da terra e do universo, ciências sociais e biológicas, das artes e do artesanato, da música, do teatro e da literatura, da computação e da moda, das engenharias, da publicidade e propaganda, além dos processos próprios à arquitetura, ao urbanismo e ao design. São bem-vindas preocupações relacionadas à sustentabilidade sócio-ambiental, ao planejamento e à construção do espaço urbano, à formulação e aplicação de políticas públicas, ao uso de meios digitais em construções coletivas de conhecimento, inclusive através de redes sociais. Estimulam-se também trabalhos sobre a preparação, a análise, a descrição, a revisão e a revisitação de experiências ligadas a expressões culturais de comunidades e grupos, ou que tragam à contemporaneidade saberes tradicionais, ou ainda que produzam e estimulem conexões entre culturas, desenvolvendo e ampliando práticas artísticas ditas de rua.

O foco dessa edição são trabalhos científicos, tecnológicos e artísticos que se dediquem à exploração e à descrição de processos de criação, suas linguagens, meios, métodos, ferramentas e atores envolvidos. PRESENCE IN THE MINDFIELD:
Art, Identity and the Technology of Transformation

The conference will look at art as behaviour of mind, embedded in the physical world, but articulating its immateriality. Just as institutionalized art, with its tired orthodoxies of instruction, production and distribution, is challenged by the new technologies of knowing and perception, so our sense of self - its singularity and authenticity - is open to reconstruction and reinterpretation. In his assault on identity and authorship, the great Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa created over 70 heteronyms. “His jostling aliases,” as John Gray has put it, “expressing his belief that the individual subject - the core of European thought - is an illusion.” This exploration of the plurality of self finds is contemporary expression in the proliferation of personas and avatars through which we navigate the actual and virtual universes of our making. Transdisciplinary discourse, the adoption of new technologies, the invisible forces and fields of the sciences, the recuperation of abandoned metaphysical and spiritual models of being, can all find expression within the context of this conference.

Presentations and papers are invited from artists, and theorists in all fields!

CHAMADA DE COMUNICAÇÕES

A. Destinatários : Semiótica e perspectiva interdisciplinar

A semiótica do espaço procura contribuir para o entendimento dos efeitos de sentido a que a noção de espaço está associada, assim como para operacionalizar os seus instrumentos de análise. O Congresso Regional Europeu da Associação Internacional de Semiótica Visual (AISV-IAVS) deverá interessar todos os que trabalham e reflectem sobre a significação dos fenómenos espaciais ligados, entre outras áreas, à arquitectura, à geografia, ao urbanismo, à comunicação, ao design, às artes plásticas, à cibercultura, à performance, à televisão, ao cinema, à literatura e ao marketing. O Congresso procurará associar investigadores de semiótica de todas as suas filiações: barthesiana, cognitivista, greimasiana, peirceana, pragmatista, retórico-argumentativista,… A diversidade de pontos de vista potenciará uma perspectiva comparativa de aprofundamento dos instrumentos e das metodologias interdisciplinares que caracterizam a teoria semiótica. Norbert Wiener anunciou "o futuro do mundo será uma luta cada vez mais renhida contra os limites da nossa inteligência".

B. Contextualização: Campos espaciais e visuais inerentes à aceleração da história

Nos últimos séculos os fenómenos espaciais têm vindo a sofrer grandes mutações devido à aceleração da história (Virilio): no século XIX destaca-se o grande movimento dos caminhos de ferro; no século XX a velocidade supersónica dos aviões e dos foguetões; o século XXI é marcado pela cultura da instantaneidade tornada possível graças às novas tecnologias que abriram, através da Web, uma brecha, "um mundo dentro do Mundo". As consequências da aceleração da história são multiplas mas escolhemos destacar duas tendências:
• A urbanização do tempo real – O tempo das "massas e das máquinas" (Ernest Jünger), que é o nosso, é também o tempo da "comunicação generalizada" (Gianni Vattimo), e configura um espaço de visualidades assistidas e formuladas pela técnica, enfim, um ambiente de redes electrónicas. Ao mobilizarem a época, as tecnologias da informação deram outros contornos ao mercado global e aceleraram o tempo histórico, ligando os indivíduos em tempo real. Por sua vez, as biotecnologias, fundindo o orgânico e o inorgânico, proporcionam-nos uma criação de híbridos, que corresponde a uma superação da própria vida humana, uma vida imaginariamente enriquecida e melhorada biotecnologicamente. A Web permitiu, assim, a criação ex novo de um novo espaço e de uma realidade nova "um mundo dentro do Mundo". Passamos a falar de espaço digital, de espaço global, de espaço das redes sociais, de espaço público global e de ciberespaço. O digital, a cibercultura e o movimento das redes electrónicas constituem-se como um espaço alternativo, que nos acolhe a nós e ao mundo, como a navegação que importa para chegarmos à nova América de um novo paradigma cultural.
• A desurbanização do espaço real – Este ciberespaço despoletou um deslocamento da noção de espaço, o sujeito deixa de se representar apenas no espaço concreto do território e passa a representar-se também no espaço interactivo da comunicação. Segundo Virilio as novas tecnologias provocam a "tele presença" e simultaneamente a velocidade absoluta e o controlo absoluto. As formas de utilização desta "tele presença" pelo mercado mundial geram a urbanização do tempo real e a desurbanização do espaço real, sendo a resultante uma cidade global e mutante. Como Rem Koolhaas ilustra no Harvard Project on the City, a "cidade mutante" possui como característica comum, ser regida pela dinâmica do valor mercantil à escala global e agrupar uma população superior a 10 milhões de habitantes. Segundo Koolhaas estas "cidades mutantes" sublinham determinados mecanismos de espacialização, que permitirão forjar certamente um novo paradigma de cidade contemporânea. A condição espacial contemporânea é uma realidade móvel, flutuante, da Ásia à América, da África à Europa, é o berço de grandes energias que atravessam o mundo num instante produzindo uma sociedade que mudou radicalmente de escala.
As duas tendências expostas, ao longo desta contextualização sobre os campos espaciais e visuais inerentes à aceleração da história afectam particularmente as produções visuais. O poder do canal visual já permitia uma apercepção aparentemente imediata dos fenómenos e do seu tratamento espacializado. A aceleração dos processos de troca reforça sem dúvida esta característica fundamental.

C. Temas para a reflexão e o debate

1. Semiótica e sistemas de valor – novos espaços e novas modalidades visuais
De que modo "a urbanização do tempo real e a desurbanização do espaço real" se explicita visualmente em cada um dos nossos domínios (arquitectura, geografia, urbanismo, comunicação, design, artes plásticas, cibercultura, performance, televisão, cinema, literatura, marketing, etc.)? Será que a gestão destes novos espaços e destas novas modalidades visuais não pressupõe um questionamento dos sistemas de valor à escala planetária?
2. Semiótica e estruturação das produções visuais
Será que o novo paradigma de cidade contemporânea exigirá outras gramáticas espaciais? Uma vez que a cronodiversidade —um passado, um presente e um futuro—, condição necessária para a estruturação progressiva do espaço, se vai diluindo na instantaneidade, exigirá a cidade contemporânea outras formas de estruturação? Será que o espaço "real"se verá reduzido apenas a uma estrutura de superfície, sem memória, sem sociodiversidade, sem biodiversidade?
3. Semiótica e ciberespaço. Novos parâmetros espaciais, novas modalidades visuais?
Os media que convergem para as redes de computadores interligadas criam novos tipos de espaços: espaços de relação, de projecção, de encenação, de constituição da actualidade…. Precisamos de facto interrogar a maneira como a cultura é cada vez mais determinada pelo espaço mediático. O ciberespaço introduz parâmetros de espacialidade diferentes do espaço "real"? Será pertinente construir uma semiótica do ciberespaço? Podemos conjugar os objectos ciberespaciais, com objectos como as nuvens, as atmosferas ou os climas, convertidos em temas recorrentes das performances artísticas?
4. Novos espaços e morfologias
Considerando as obras fundadoras da morfologia (Goethe, Saint-Hillaire, D'Arcy Thompson, Warburg, Gombrich, Thom) o impacto da abordagem morfológica em campos tão diversos quanto a biologia, a matemática, o urbanismo, a análise da dinâmica de sistemas nas ciências sociais, ou na história e na filosofia da arte e considerando ainda o impacto de outras correntes inovadoras, como a semiótica morfodinâmica e as neurociências, que possuem como objecto a interacção perceptiva entre o sujeito e o seu meio,... De que forma o olhar de uma semiótica morfodinâmica nos permitirá abordar as questões ligadas à urbanização do tempo real e à desurbanização do espaço real?
5. Espaços de vivência
A maior parte das nossas experiências sociais, intelectuais e sensíveis, mesmo as mais elaboradas, estão ligadas ao espaço situacional: onde encontrar o outro, fugir de um perigo, agarrar um objecto, alimentar-se, observar um fenómeno, … Como é que estes diferentes espaços situacionais e factuais se tornam o suporte epistémico do conhecimento e da experiência? Será que o espaço físico possui a mesma estrutura que o espaço social, territorial, ou que o espaço das nossas abstracções? Os espaços fabricados: teatral, ficcional, pictural, escultural, arquitectural, etc., são eles a expressão da nossa cognição imaginária, das nossas representações mentais? Qual será o contributo da semiótica cognitiva à compreensão da significação espacial e das mutações visuais? De que forma a experiência, a fenomenologia espacial e as novas modalidades visuais se orientaram para a evolução das funções semióticas? E qual é a sua relação com a fenomenologia do tempo?

Os resumos devem ser escritos em Francês ou Inglês e não poderão exceder as 500 palavras. Todos os resumos serão avaliados em revisão de pares, de acordo com os seguintes critérios: originalidade, relevância e ligação às temáticas do congresso.
Para facilitar o processo de revisão por pares, a comissão organizadora solicita que seja adoptado o seguinte formato de submissão por correio electrónico. No corpo da mensagem é obrigatória a inclusão dos seguintes dados:

The ISEA International Foundation Board is pleased to announce that the 19th International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA2013) will be held in Sydney, Australia.

Following a competitive bid process, ISEA2013 had been awarded to the proposal from the Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT) led by ANAT Chief Executive Officer Gavin Artz.

ISEA2013 will be held in conjunction with the VIVID Festival in June/July 2013 and co-ordinated by an Organising Committee comprised of representatives from ANAT, College of Fine Arts (UNSW), Australia Council for the Arts, University of Sydney, University of Technology Sydney, Experimenta, Events NSW and d/Lux/Media Arts.

Gavin Artz commented on the successful bid by saying: "2013 will be the 21st anniversary of TISEA (Third International Symposium on Electronic Art) in Sydney and it is the right time to bring ISEA back to Sydney. The Organising Committee will create an ISEA that will be innovative and which will aim at setting a new benchmark in Electronic Art".

O número 05 da revista V!RUS propõe como tema a revisitação de conceitos relacionados ao habitar, compreendendo o cotidiano urbano e os lugares nos quais ele se desenvolve. Tais conceitos foram o ponto de partida da criação do Nomads.usp, cujo nome era, em sua formulação inicial, Núcleo de Estudos sobre Habitação e Modos de Vida. Ao longo de seus dez anos de existência, o núcleo foi ampliando e complexizando seus estudos sobre essa relação entre espaços e comportamentos, passando a incluir processos de comunicação, que têm o potencial de tornar híbridos os espaços físicos da habitação e da cidade.

O tema "lugares do habitar: revisited" expressa um tripé no qual apoiamos a reflexão proposta. Por um lado, a noção de lugar envolve espacialidades físicas, híbridas e virtuais vinculadas ao desenrolar da vida cotidiana das pessoas. Por outro, o verbo habitar utilizado como substantivo permite abranger o caráter de imprevisibilidade e não-determinismo, de diversidade e mobilidade, que reveste os atos humanos. Por fim, revisitar esses conceitos significa lançar sobre eles um olhar agora re-orientado por posturas teóricas que foram se tornando importantes no Nomads.usp ao longo dos anos: o pensamento complexo, a teoria cibernética de segunda ordem, os estudos sobre experiência, por exemplo.

O foco da edição é absolutamente contemporâneo, procurando examinar, na atualidade, posturas, reflexões, críticas, registros e proposições relacionados com as atuais concepções de lugares do habitar, no Brasil e no mundo. Busca-se, assim, construir uma visão sobre produtos de ações públicas, privadas ou mistas, em todas as suas formas de produção e uso, inseridos em contexto urbano.

São bem-vindas contribuições que ofereçam explorações da temática central, como aportes advindos das ciências sociais, das artes, da música, da filosofia, dos estudos populacionais, do direito, das ciências médicas, das políticas públicas, dos estudos sobre sustentabilidade sócio-ambiental, sobre domótica e a automação do cotidiano, sobre a qualidade dos produtos imobiliários nas grandes cidades, além das abordagens próprias à arquitetura, ao urbanismo e ao design.

Visando aprofundar a exploração desse assunto, preferimos excluir dessa chamada os processos de projeto, suas linguagens, métodos, meios e ferramentas, os estudos de cunho histórico que abordem períodos passados sem conexão direta com realidades atuais, e os estudos sobre espacialidades e vivências existentes unicamente em ambientes digitais.

Além de textos e imagens fixas, são bem-vindos peças musicais e depoimentos em arquivos de áudio, projetos de arquitetura, urbanismo e design e a reflexão crítica sobre sua concepção, vídeos e filmes curtos, apresentações de slides, animações, entrevistas, considerando o interesse do Nomads.usp em explorar as possibilidades de uso de meios digitais para divulgação científica.

ISEA2011 Istanbul is the international festival of new media, electronic and
digital arts. The 17th International Symposium on Electronic Art, a leading
world conference and exhibition event for art, media and technology, is
scheduled for September 14 to 21, 2011 in Istanbul, Turkey.

The ISEA2011 Istanbul exhibition will coincide with the Istanbul Biennial and will
provide a fantastic opportunity to showcase contemporary new media arts.

We invite proposals for panels, artworks, papers and workshops form artists,
scientist and academics interested in how the digital and electronic media
are re-shaping contemporary society and behaviors.

ISEA2011 Istanbul will be open to proposals encompassing a large range of
topics under the general theme of interdisciplinarity at the intersection of

You are invited to submit full journal papers to the International Journal of Performance Arts and Digital Media (IJPADM) for a special issue on Mixed Reality and Performance. Mixed Reality performances have highlighted our ability to: exist, understand and concurrently engage with both virtual and real worlds in a performative way. The development of the technologies under-pinning such Mixed Reality systems have afforded performers, directors and developers the chance to create experiences that can both spatially and temporally explore the boundaries of performance and understand where and why performance occurs in everyday life. These experiences can exist in a multitude of realities, that not only blur the boundary between the real and the virtual, but also re-define the distinction between the roles of audience and performer, creating new audience/performer-based paradigms.

Although new technologies have furthered these possibilities, there are low-tech approaches that have explored the orchestration and directions of performance and used these mechanisms to convey experience, imbue presence and a sense of place.

Contributions may consider any of the following topics (although these are not prescriptive): full-length articles (ideally between 5000 and 8000 words)

The conference will be part of Norway´s new biennial for art and technology, Meta.Morf, that takes place in Trondheim from October 7 to November 7, 2010.

The Consciousness Reframed conference series was founded by Roy Ascott at the University of Wales in 1997. The advent of interactive graphical systems lays the basis for a new mode of
story-telling realized as
Interactive Digital Storytelling (IDS), applicable to interactive
entertainment, computer games,
education, therapy and other interactive digital applications. It raises
opportunities and addresses
challenges for redefining the experience of narrative through interactive
simulations of computer-
generated story worlds.

IDS thus offers interesting new possibilities for games, training, and
learning, through the enriching of
virtual characters with intelligent behavior, the collaboration of humans
and machines in the creative
process, and the combination of narrative knowledge and user activity in
interactive artifacts. In order
to create novel applications, in which users play a significant role
together with digital characters and
other autonomous elements, new concepts for Human-Computer Interaction have
to be developed.
Novel conceptions from theoretical work in the Humanities and interactive
art must also be
incorporated.

IDS draws on many aspects of Computer Science, and specifically on
Artificial Intelligence, with topics
such as narrative intelligence, automatic dialogue- and drama
management, cognitive robotics and smart graphics. In order to process
stories in real time, existing
modes of storytelling must be formalized into computable models, combining
ideas from narratology
with computer programming. This has so far resulted in a technological
complexity largely inaccessible
to potential creators of IDS and end-users. There is therefore a need for
new authoring concepts and
tools supporting the creation of dynamic story models, allowing for rich and
meaningful interaction
with the content. Finally, there is a need for theoretical foundations
considering the integration of so
far disjunctive approaches and cultures.

We welcome research papers, case studies and demonstrations including
interactive narrative art -
presenting new scientific results, innovative technologies, creative
insights, best practice showcases, or
improvements to existing techniques and approaches in the multidisciplinary
research field of
interactive digital storytelling and its related application areas, e.g.
games, virtual/online worlds, e-
learning, edutainment, and entertainment.

process will be selected for

Places & Spaces: Mapping Science is meant to inspire cross-disciplinary
discussion on how to best track and communicate human activity and
scientific progress on a global scale. It has two components: the physical
part supports the close inspection of high quality reproductions of maps for
display at conferences and education centers; the online counterpart
provides links to a selected series of maps and their makers along with
detailed explanations of how these maps work. The exhibit is a 10-year
effort. Each year, 10 new maps are added resulting in 100 maps total in
2014.

ISEA International is pleased to announce that the 17th International
Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA2011) will be held in Istanbul, Turkey.

Following a competitive bid process, ISEA2011 had been awarded to the
proposal from Sabanci University led by Dr. Lanfranco Aceti, Associate
Professor in Contemporary Art & Digital Culture and supported by Prof.
Mehmet Bac, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

The ISEA International Foundation Board, the governing body of the
international ISEA network, made the selection of Istanbul.

The Board was impressed by the proposal, which focuses on Istanbul as a
gateway between Europe and Asia, representing a cultural and creative
meeting point for current debates in the fields of art, science and
technology.

Following Istanbul as European Capital of Culture in 2010, ISEA2011 will be
held in September 2011, to coincide with the prestigious Istanbul Biennale.
The proposal from Sabanci University aims to bring the academic community of
Istanbul together and embrace the vibrant visual art scene, which is
flourishing in the cosmopolitan atmosphere of contemporary Istanbul.

With an academic conference, accompanied by a programme of exhibitions,
performances and workshops, ISEA2011 will be an international gathering of
leading and emerging thinkers and practitioners working at the interface of
art and technology.

It continues the established and dynamic series of ISEA events, established
in 1988 in the Netherlands. ISEA has been held across the world including
symposia in Japan, Australia, USA and Europe. ISEA2009 was held in Belfast,
Ireland with ISEA2010 being staged in the RUHR region of Germany.

About The Journal

The International Journal of Knowledge and Web Intelligence proposes and fosters discussion on the techniques, systems, methods and applications that help the World Wide Web to transform from a static data and information repository into an interactive, dynamic, transparent and secure knowledge and service network. The Web has become a ubiquitous tool for finding and sharing information, and conducting business, learning and entertainment. This journal is committed to deepening the understanding of enabling technologies for applying and developing the Web as a global information repository as well as computational, cognitive and social foundations of the Web.

The journal publishes original papers, review papers, technical reports, survey papers, case studies, conference reports, book reviews, notes, commentaries, and issues. Special issues devoted to important topics in Knowledge and Web Intelligence will occasionally be published.

Topics of interest to IJKWI include, but not limited to:

The manuscript, in English and not to exceed 20 pages, must be in Microsoft-Word or PDF file. There are no formatting requirements. Special cases exceeding page limit will be considered. Please submit your paper to Dr. Richi Nayak
(r.nayak@qut.edu.au) or Prof. Lakhmi Jain (Lakhmi.Jain@unisa.edu.au) as an e-mail attachment. The authors are advised to suggest names, affiliations, and full contact information including email addresses of at least three knowledgeable individuals who have published in the subject area of the paper.

MISSION

ISEA International is a nonprofit organization fostering interdisciplinary
academic discourse and exchange among culturally diverse organizations and
individuals working with art, science and emerging technologies.

The ISEA International Foundation Board oversees the selection of host
organizations for the annual International Symposium on Electronic Art,
(ISEA) a gathering of the international art, science and technology
community.

ISEA International is committed to diversity and supports proposals from
both developed and developing countries. ISEA International acknowledges
that the circumstances of the Host Organization may vary considerably and
these circumstances will be taken into account. It also encourages
partnerships between developed and developing countries to submit proposals.

ISEA2009 is hosted by the University of Ulster and will take place in
Northern Ireland from 23 August ? 1 September

BACKGROUND

The series of symposia known as the International Symposium on Electronic
Art was initiated in 1988 to create and maintain an international network of
organizations and individuals active in the field of the electronic arts. In
1990 this network took shape as an association, founded in The Netherlands,
called the Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts (ISEA).

In 2006 the Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts was discontinued as a
membership organization and was replaced with the ISEA International
Foundation. In 2009 a new operational base ISEA Headquarters will be
established at the University of Brighton.

The aims of ISEA International and of the ISEA Symposia are

- Creation of a structured approach towards the problems and potentials of
electronic arts

- Promotion of communication between organizations and individuals and
promotion of interdisciplinarity and cross-cultural communication /
cooperation between the arts and the fields of technology, science,
education, and industry.

- Research, present and exhibit work related to ISEA?s mission.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Submissions will be accepted from:

Category 1: Educational Institutions (Universities, Art schools, Museums
etc.); Artistic, Cultural or Scientific Organizations.

Category 2*: Congress organizing bureaus;

Category 3**: Umbrella organizations created for the purpose of hosting an
ISEA Symposium.

*Category 2 applicants must be able to demonstrate evidence of organizing
earlier, comparable and successful events.

**Category 3 applicants must show evidence of support and thus prove the
feasibility of their financial plan.

SELECTION PROCESS AND DEADLINES

All interested Hose Organizations are strongly recommended to contact ISEA

shall be submitted first, followed by a full proposal. All shortlisted Host
Organizations are invited to make a presentation about their bid at ISEA2009
in Belfast.

Dualisms shape our worldview. They include Mind/Matter, Self/Other, Perception/Reality, Quantum/Classical, Wave/Particle, Spiritual/Material, Beginning/End, Male/Female, Living/Dead and Good/Evil.

Wisdom gained through meditation, yoga and mystical experiences suggest these dichotomies are illusory. Eastern mystics know a single underlying reality called advaita, Brahman, the Tao, or Nirvana, from which all existence arises through consciousness. Nonduality is the philosophical and spiritual understanding that dualisms obscure a deeper reality of non-separation and fundamental oneness.

On the other hand, science depends on empirical data leading to reductionism, materialism and apparent dichotomies. But discove! ries in quantum physics, brain sciences, consciousness studies, biology, cosmology and other fields have revealed nonduality in science as well, suggesting mysticism and science share a common source. Applying nondual perspectives in science, and scientific perspectives in Eastern spiritual approaches are the twin goals of this, the first public conference on the Science of Nonduality. Join us for three days seeking fundamental oneness in quantum physics, philosophy, consciousness studies, cosmology, art, Buddhism, psychology and spiritual metaphysics.

We cordially invite submissions from artists, designers, theorists and researchers engaged in transdisciplinary inquiry into the concept of design and designing and art as well as technology, and in its relationship to media as a behaving entity. The proposed ambiguity is on purpose and we encourage submitting proposals theorizing design with unusual and unexpected perspectives.
Design is more and more framed as a platform of integration in various scientific communities therefore it will be interesting what it can bring to the foreground framing it with artistic, technological and scientific production and accompanying it with a research perspective.

The Conference will be accompanied by a publication of Abstracts, and Conference Proceedings, including full papers and a DVD, due to be released summer 2010

XVIII Encontro Anual da COMPOS

A Associação Nacional dos Programas de Pós-Graduação em Comunicação, COMPÓS, realizará o seu XVIII Encontro Anual na Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais, de 02 a 05 de junho de 2009. Os trabalhos para os GTs podem ser enviados até 15 de fevereiro de 2009. Os textos devem ter no máximo 35.000 caracteres com espaços (incluindo títulos, resumo, notas de rodapé, referências bibliográficas). O resumo deve ter entre 500 e 1.000 caracteres. Os trabalhos devem ser inéditos e enviados pelo site da COMPÓS a apenas um dos Grupos de Trabalho.

Dia 24/09/2008 – Palestra - Poéticas da mobilidade em espaços cíbridos
Em um cotidiano cada vez mais permeado por referências e conceitos tecnológicos, surgem paisagens cíbridas, mesclando espaços físicos e digitais. Junto à isso, conceitos como identidade, presença e corpo se revelam complexos e paradoxais. Nesse contexto, surgem propostas artísticas que subvertem as lógicas do sistema dominante e propõem usos disruptivos para as novas tecnologias. Distanciadas tanto do sistema tradicional da arte (museus, galerias), como das feiras tecnológicas, as poéticas nômades se afirmam como experimentações da cibercultura.

Exposição - Plural maps: lost in São Paulo

Plural Maps é um projeto de net arte colaborativa que incorpora labirintos construídos em VRML e links que levam a pontos específicos da cidade. O objetivo deste projeto é se apropriar da WWW para a construção de uma cartografia da cidade de São Paulo. Essa cartografia será criada a partir de pontos previamente locados pela artista e por escolhas enviadas pelos participantes da WWW.
